The inverter converts DC power from your panels to AC for your home. Choosing the right type โ string, microinverter, or hybrid โ matters as much as the panels themselves.
Best for: Unshaded roofs, budget-conscious installs
Best for: Complex roofs, partial shading
Best for: Anyone planning to add battery storage

All grid-connected inverters in Australia must be listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved inverter list and comply with AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 (grid connection and inverter requirements) including Region-A settings. SMA Sunny Boy/Tripower, Fronius Primo/Symo, Sungrow SG/SH, GoodWe DNS/ET, SolarEdge Home Hub, and Enphase IQ8 are widely used. AS/NZS 4777.2 also mandates volt-watt and volt-VAr response curves, which most Distributors (Energex, Ausgrid, SAPN, etc.) require to be enabled.
Most SEA and Australian markets cap export at 5 kW single-phase or the registered inverter AC rating. Solutions: (1) use a hybrid inverter with export-limiting firmware (Sungrow SH, SolarEdge Energy Hub) and add a battery to self-consume surplus; (2) use a smart meter like Fronius Smart Meter with Dynamic Peak Shaving to throttle export; (3) size DC:AC ratio aggressively (1.3โ1.4ร) so the inverter clips at the export cap rather than the panels limiting.
Yes โ mount inverters in shade or indoors. All CEC-approved inverters derate above 45โ50ยฐC ambient; Fronius GEN24 and SolarEdge Home Hub maintain full output to 45ยฐC, Enphase IQ8+ microinverters are rated โ40 to +65ยฐC but still lose ~5% above 60ยฐC ambient. In equatorial SEA, prefer units with forced-air cooling in NEMA 4X / IP66 enclosures for outdoor wall mounts, and avoid direct afternoon sun.
Microinverters (Enphase IQ8+) are an attractive choice for condos and landed homes with partial shading from adjacent blocks or towers โ per-panel MPPT recovers significantly more energy under intermittent shade. They also remove a single point of failure, which matters when roof access requires scaffolding. String inverters remain cheaper for simple unshaded rooftops.
String inverters typically last 8โ12 years in humid tropical climates (shorter than the 10โ15-year temperate-climate figure) due to electrolytic capacitor ageing. Enphase microinverters carry 25-year warranties and generally outlast the panels. Hybrid inverters fall in the middle. Budget one inverter replacement over a 25-year solar system life and request a waterproof indoor or shaded outdoor mount.
